Athletic score dramatic home win
Tuesday July 1 2008
The Orangeville Athletic tasted victory at Rotary Park in dramatic fashion on Thursday night, defeating Innisfil SC 2-1. The Athletic had been unsuccessful winning at home in their previous two tries, but they managed to get things back on track and improve their league record to 2-1-3.
The Allto Construction Athletic started the game off on the wrong foot to say the least. It was Innisfil who struck first from a set piece in the 20th minute. The ball was delivered into the box from 30 yards out where it was headed home by the Innisfil striker who had managed to go unmarked on the play. It was not the start the Athletic had wanted but they continued to work hard and eventually took back the momentum of the game.
Orangeville tied the game up minutes before the half when Guilio Baldassarra was rewarded for some good hustle work. As the Innisfil defence attempted to pass the ball between each other on the back line, Baldassarra chased them down and intercepted the pass and coolly beat the Innisfil goalie. The teams went into the half tied 1-1.
The second half was well fought out by both teams. Innisfil thought they had earned the go ahead goal in the 70th minute, but it was ruled offside by the linesman. Orangeville worked hard to create some excellent scoring opportunities but just couldn’t seem to find the net.
With time running out and Orangeville desperately needing a win, they pressed forward. It was in the 85th minute where the Athletic would go ahead for good. Vince Spremulli played a nice give-and-go to Baldassarra, who streaked in and fired a shot on the Innisfil goalie. The goalie managed to make the first save but let out a rebound that came right out to James Willemse, who made no mistake as he rifled the rebound into the net from close range.
The Athletic play their next home game on Sunday, July 13 at 11 a.m. where they will face Alliston in the quarterfinal match for the Traganitis Cup.
