The Orangeville Hawks major bantam boys basketball team finished their season at the Ontario Cup provincial championships. The Hawks end their season with a bronze medal in-hand, along with some other satisfying wins.
After a slow start to the season, the Hawks won their first regular season game against Midland #2 by a 56-23 score, and followed that with a 59-37 win over Owen Sound. The Hawks next games came in a tournament in Markham, where they won all three games on the first day against Markham, Halton Hills and Huntsville. Their next opponent was Halton Hills in the bronze medal game, with the Hawks prevailing 35-33.
The following weekend the Hawks played three excellent games in Orillia. In the first game against Midland #1, with only five players, the Hawks won 51-33. In their best games of the season the Hawks defeated Huntsville 60-35 and Orillia 54-26 with only six players.
Finally, the Hawks travelled to London for the provincial tournament. They lost their first game to Hamilton Wildcats #1 by a 46-22 score. The next day the Hawks played Stratford, and they narrowly won 43-30. In that game, Charles Ten Eick scored a basket using his head! He was going up for a rebound and the ball bounced off his head and into the net. They then played Barrie #2, who had beaten the Hawks three times this season. But when it counted, the Hawks won 47-29, and advanced to the quarterfinals. Against the Oakville Vytis the Hawks tried their best, but had their season end 43-38 at the hands of Oakville.
Overall the Hawks had a great season and started winning at the right time. The Hawks are: Tyler Guidotti, Charles Ten Eick, Matt Pflance, Seanne Manabat, Taylor Hartley, Douglas Costanzo, George Umeh, Marco Zanette, Jesse Irons-Crocker, Spencer Chalmers and Carlo Zanette. A special thanks goes out to coaches John Zanette and Dave Costanzo.
On June 5, Basketball Ontario announced the Hawks as the winners of the Spaulding Fair Play Award at the Ontario Cup provincial basketball championships. The winners received a Spalding prize package.
