The Orangeville Junior B Northmen dominated the Guelph Regals from start to finish, winning a key divisional game Monday night.
The Northmen built a commanding 5-1 lead in the opening period and cruised to an 11-6 win.
“This was a big game, and that was something we definitely stressed,” Northmen assistant coach Ryan Emilio said. “Our division is probably one of the tightest in the entire league. So any time we can beat a division rival it’s a big win.”
Orangeville led 5-2 after the opening period, on goals by D.J. Clevely, Adam Hawkins, Dustin Caravello, Cody McLeod and Frankie Collins. Collins’ goal chased Guelph starter Ricky McGarr, but the goalie change didn’t slow the Northmen offence. With their transition game working effectively, Collins (2), Cedar Jasiuk and Clevely added second period goals to stretch the Orangeville lead to 9-4 after 40 minutes.
“You might catch a team by surprise in the first couple of minutes, but they’re going to catch on to it,” Emilio said about the Northmen’s transition game. “It’s more or less just us working harder than them and finding a way to win.”
The teams exchanged third period goals, Caravello and Collins, with his fourth of the night, scoring for Orangeville. Curtis Rydall picked up the win in net for the Northmen, who improved to 4-3 with the victory. After struggling offensively to start the year, the Northmen have now scored in double digits for the past two games.
“We’re just changing it up, trying to get some flow going, something better for the team,” Collins said. “Just trying to see if we can get something to work for us, and it has so far.”
The Regals dropped to 3-4 with the loss. As host for the Founders Cup, the Regals get an automatic entry into the national championship tournament, but they didn’t look worthy of the invitation Monday night.
“You’ve got to show up to work for these division games,” Regals coach Kyle Arbuckle said. “No one is going to hand it to you. I think they’re all going to be close games. [Monday] was a bit of a stinker for us. They outworked us in loose balls.”
The Northmen, sponsored by MacMaster Pontiac, played Owen Sound last night (Thursday). Results were unavailable at press time. Orangeville hosts Wallaceburg on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre.
