A Spring Affair, organized by members of the Caledon community, recently raised $13,105 for Hospice Caledon’s 10-bed residential hospice, Bethell House, which will begin construction this month in Inglewood.

“Doreen Beffort and her committee did an outstanding job of organizing this fashion show,” said Heather Zak, Hospice Caledon director. “It was such a success, with tickets sold out far in advance, that the committee tells us they are considering repeating the event this fall.”

Donations and events such as A Spring Affair will make it possible for Hospice Caledon to meet its $8 million goal to build Bethell House with quality and ensure Hospice Caledon’s operation will be sustained for future generations, Zak said.

“We are all aware we have an aging population and a growing responsibility to provide quality end-of-life care,” said Zak.  “Remaining at home is not always a viable option.  With no palliative care beds located within the town, and waiting lists to access the beds in neighbouring communities, Bethell House offers a high-quality, low-operating cost solution.

“Bethell House is a home away from home alternative for end-of-life care. It means that loved ones may spend their last weeks or days with choices — having a bed wheeled outside to feel sun on their face or see the stars, listening to the sound of a grandchild’s voice, having a warm, gentle bath, smelling chicken soup cooking in a country kitchen, cuddling with a pet or sleeping with their spouse in their arms,” Zak said.

Hospice Caledon has raised approximately $5.5 million thus far in the quiet phase of its $8 million capital campaign. The community phase of the campaign will be launched June 22.
