Dufferin’s compost will be cut off from the Region of Peel facility in Caledon.
“We don’t have a timeline yet, but soon we will not have a place to go,” said director of public works, Trevor Lewis, during a May 8 council meeting.
Lewis met with staff from Peel’s waste management department in April and was told the region is planning to cut Dufferin off from the Peel facility.
“Peel’s SSO (source separated organics) program has been going well and they are nearing their design capacity at their treatment facility,” Lewis states in a report to council.
To make room for Peel’s compost, the region will stop accepting Dufferin’s compost.
Dufferin has been sending its compost to the Peel facility since 2006, when the City of Guelph’s facility closed.
Sending the compost to Peel was a temporary solution until Dufferin could build its own facility. Although staff has not been given a timeline for when this will take effect, Lewis said it will be before the Dufferin-York facility is up and running.
Lewis said the region is looking into sending some of its compost to another facility in another municipality. Lewis said the region might offer to take Dufferin’s composting with its own.
Lewis also said county staff are investigating other facilities for the material, but regardless, the cost of the program will go up as a result.
